Sunless Skies Ost Dark

Shining, radiant, wrathful. It drifts in the sky like Ezekiel's chariot. Its golden plating is ruptured; the hymns of its crew silenced. Only the light remains: fading, but still burnished and brazen.

Faithful 'til the end
At the heart of the golden engine you discover a chapel. Freestanding panes of stained glass transform the dreadnought's stark light into washes of prismatic colour. Most were broken by the violence, but one remains intact. The corpses of the crew litter the brassy floor, their hands still clasped in prayer. One of your companions cries out suddenly that the dreadnought's light has made her blind. Back on your engine, you remove her goggles to discover that her eyes have turned to glass in their sockets.

An unusual consignment
Discounting the damage done in the battle, the dreadnought is orderly and clean. The crew had little in the way of personal effects. Only in the captain's cabin do you find an unexpected lockbox. It contains a consignment of souls. Not common souls, either; they would blaze brightly if everything were not already flooded with brightness. According to a set of orders so terse as to be practically opaque, they were bound for Sky Barnet.

A casualty
In the boiler room, pipes rattle and squeal, firing jets of scalding steam at inopportune moments. The damage is extensive, and will soon be fatal. You and a crewman seize cases of fuel and lug them away. At that moment a pipe ruptures, and an explosion fells your assistant and sets the case he was carrying smouldering. You flee with your own prize before the explosion tears the dreadnought apart.

A successful mission
An explosion in the belly of the dreadnought locates the boiler room for you. Beside it, still untouched by flame, are steel boxes. You drag as many as you can back to your colleagues.

The massive guns of the Dreadnought have finally fallen silent. The hulk hangs in the firmament like a shed spider skin in a web, viewed from the vantage of the fly. Its sides are scored and open, its windows shattered. Smoke billows from its blind eyes. London will not see what transpires here.

Check the navigation suite
If the Dreadnought kept secrets, they are here.
  • Looting ≥ 1 and ≤ 50
Entirely legal
The suite is upholstered in scarlet velvet and brass, like an opera box with artillery. Unused weaponry lines the walls, their shadows spilling over the empty glasses strewn about the comfortable chairs and tables. Among a stack of papers (mostly tracking suspected criminals along secret routes), is a Ministry Permit for Discretionary Activities.
  • +1 x Ministry-Stamped Permit

Game note: You may gain an Unlicensed Chart.

Rare event (25%)
Strange trails
The lanterns have all gone out in the suite and no candles are left to burn. The light of far off stars filters through the shattered stained glass in iridescent shadows. Among the darkling haze of colour, you uncover a chart detailing some very illicit trade routes indeed. Was the Dreadnought on the trail of smugglers? Or was it looking to supplement its income, far away from London's watchful eyes?
  • +1 x Unlicensed Chart
  • x Charred Stovepipe Nameplate
Rummage in the kitchens
  • Looting ≥ 51 and ≤ 100
Heaven's bounty
Your chef is delighted at the abundance of food still intact in the kitchens. He shouts something about 'a cornucopia' before he disappears into the pantry again. Sweet biscuits, tea cakes, herbs from Traitor's Wood and succulent fungus from Hybras, good British tea, and a few measures of whisky are unearthed from the vast larders of the Dreadnought. You have bought your crew a few nights of restful sleep on full bellies.

Raid the engine's lockbox
It sits on the captain's desk, heavy as miser's heart.
  • Looting ≥ 80 and ≤ 100
Inside, after some deft work with the boltcutters, are a series of documents. Crisp, white, Ministry-stamped documents. Some are promissory notes, exchangeable in all reputable ports in the skies. Another is an invitation: to the Eternal Masque on Perdurance, where London's finest dwell within a single day.
